In a world of participation awards and trophies for all – because “everyone is a winner” – it has become increasingly more difficult to really pick out who the leaders of the pack are. Fortunately, there are still a few action movies with true heroes, who define what an alpha really is.
That’s what this list is about: The REAL bosses in the greatest action movies. Even if we could travel back in time to when trophies meant something more than just showing up, these action movie bosses would still be winning them!
#10: James Bond

A great way to start off our list, but not even we want to answer the all important question: Which actor played the best James Bond?! Maybe you have an opinion, as most people do, but we’ll just leave the character of MI6’s finest agent 007 at this spot and let you sort out the rest.
#9: Jean-Claude Van Damme as Kurt Sloane in Kickboxer

In this classic action movie from 1989, JCVD’s character learns the art of Muay Thai in what seems like a few days and eventually goes on to defeat the Thai Kickboxing Champion Tong Li. All this to avenge his brother Eric, who gets paralyzed in a fight gone bad against Tong Li in the beginning of the movie.
And if that wasn’t enough to solidify this spot for Jean-Claude Van Damme as Kurt Sloane, check out his dance moves in the movie. His talent for dancing eventually leads to a bar brawl, which he dominates of course. No problem!

#8: Uma Thurman as Beatrix Kiddo (a.k.a. The Bride) in Kill Bill

The Crazy 88 scene with limbs flying everywhere and blood squirting all over the place, as The Bride literally cuts her way through them, clearly earned her the #8 spot on our list. We’ll just leave you with this epic quote of hers: “Those of you lucky enough to still have your lives, take them with you! But leave the limbs you have lost. They belong to me now.”
#7: Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity

Another case of the first movie being the best in a trilogy (they probably should’ve just stopped after the first). Matt Damon portrayed Jason Bourne as a relentless and seemingly unstoppable CIA black ops agent with severe memory loss, who tries to find his true identity.
You could make a very convincing argument for the theory that Matt Damon’s portrayal of the Jason Bourne character greatly influenced the way Daniel Craig played the role of James Bond.
#6: Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills in Taken

While Taken 2 was a bit of a disappointment (and we can’t say that we expect next year’s Taken 3 to be much better), the first Taken movie easily remains one of our favorites.
As CIA agent Bryan Mills hunting down the captors of his kidnapped daughter in Paris, Liam Neeson is brilliant in the movie and embodies what we believe a bosslike action hero should be: Relentlessly determined and willing to use extreme violence when needed!
#5: Clint Eastwood as Blondie in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Possibly the best movie ever made, but definitely deserving of our #5 spot on this list for Eastwood’s acting job. Clint Eastwood has had many great roles during his career, but we still think this was his best.
#4: Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo in Rambo

As you can see below, John Rambo is one murderous mofo and has only turned into a more efficient killing machine over the years. Check out the incredible rise in his kill count over the years!

Whether he’s shooting arrows with exploding tips or machine guns, he gets the job done. Reckless at times, usually violent, always disobeying orders and never coming across anyone tougher than him, John Rambo is a true boss.
#3: Bruce Lee as Tung Lung / Dragon in The Way of the Dragon

Bruce Lee put martial arts movies on the map back in the 1970s, especially in North America and Europe.
In the final showdown of the movie, Bruce Lee’s character takes on Chuck Norris… and KILLS him. There you have it, folks. That’s why this is #3. Bruce Lee KILLED Chuck Norris.
#2: Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard

Easily one of the greatest action heroes ever, Bruce Willis as John McClane makes Die Hard the best Christmas movie ever. (You could argue that fact, but you’d be wrong.) He defeats the evil German mastermind/terrorist Hans Gruber and everything he can throw at him. Including shards of glass that John takes a stroll through at one point in the movie.
The role was actually supposed to go to Arnold Schwarzenegger as a sequel to Commando, but when he turned it down Bruce Willis was able to seize the day as John McClane and transform himself into our #2 best action hero of all time! Yippee ki yay!
#1: Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch in Predator

Why? Because Arnold! That’s why. We literally had to draw this one out of a hat. It was clear that Arnold would be our #1, we just couldn’t decide which role to make him #1 for! We essentially could’ve filled most of this list with all the bosslike action heroes he’s played over the years, but it really came down to either Dutch from Predator, Terminator from The Terminator, Conan from Conan the Barbarian… or John Matrix from Commando. And those aren’t even all the ones we could’ve used, when you really think about it!
Arnold also topped our Bosses of Bodybuilding list. Heck… he’ll probably top a few more of our lists in the future. The guy is unstoppable.
With all that said, we’re just going to leave you with this sweet Predator Musical! (You read that right.) Watch it nao!
