François Gissy is crazy as all get-out. If you couldn’t gather that from his wild haircut (or lack thereof) alone, then the video above should still be plenty of proof. He just went 207 mph (333 km/h) — with the top speed reached at 4.8 seconds — on a rocket-powered bicycle. Yes, a bicycle. Not a car. Not a motorcycle. A bicycle!
Although this amazing feat easily sets the bicycle world record, madman Gissy isn’t done just yet. If he can get a sponsor insane enough to help him do it, the French bicycle speed king plans to ride a rocket-powered bicycle he calls the “Spine Crusher”, which should be able to catapult him to 249 mph (400 km/h) in under two seconds. And yes, you read that right. I’m looking forward to it already! In an interview with Gizmag, he said, ‘If we can find some serious sponsors, then we would like to build a monstrous bicycle, which will be called “Spine Crusher.” The goal would be to accelerate to more than 400 km/h (249 mph) in less than two seconds. I just cross my fingers that we will have the green light soon in order to start the construction. But it doesn’t depend on me.’
Last year in 2013, he set the world record with 177 mph (285 km/h) and just decided that wasn’t fast enough, so he got back to work with the SwissRocketman team and they built a rocket-powered bicycle to crack the 200 mph mark. It was successful and Gissy didn’t die, so you know they’re not going to stop any time soon. He described the thrill of riding a rocket-powered bicycle at such insane speeds, when he said, “In the moment it is scary, but as soon you stop, you also realize how amazing that was! You cannot describe it, you have to live it.”
Oh, and did I mention he raced a Ferrari on his bicycle as well? Yeah, he did. And he won! Like a boss. It wasn’t even a contest, Gissy on his bicycle left the Ferrari in the dust. More accurately, rocket vapor! (It’s all in the video above.)
