77-year-old Gunther Holtorf just finished a 24 year journey around the world, which saw him driving over 550,000 miles through 215 countries in his Mercedes 300GD. The car was nicknamed Otto by Gunther’s late wife Christine, who passed away in 2010 from cancer after spending 20 years traveling around the world with Gunther and their Mercedes-Benz G-Class Otto.
Otto has been in more countries than any other car. Of the more than 550,000 miles they drove, over 150,000 were off road miles. The trusty Mercedes crossed more than 400 borders, went on over 40 ocean shipping containers, boarded in excess of 110 deep-sea ferries, and now resides at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. No other car could match its status as a symbol for durability. Otto is truly a legend. They even drove him up to the base camp of Mount Everest!
Gunther and Christine loved their car, as well as each other. They shared countless wonderful experiences in countries all over the world, even places that are difficult to get to (i.e. North Korea and Cuba) were explored by the couple and their Mercedes. From 1990 – 2014, Otto and his owner Gunther traveled the world, with Gunther’s wife Christine tagging along for 20 years of the trip from 1990 – 2010.
