Philani is 24 years old and lives on the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is homeless, but may be one of the most knowledgeable people you will ever meet, because he reads, reviews and sells books!
Philani decided he doesn’t want to beg for money to get by, so he keeps a collection of books that he carries around the city to sell. He reads every book before he sells it and will give you a quality review about it on the spot, when you go to him for a potential purchase.
If he has a book for kids, he will give it away free of charge like a boss, because he wants children to learn how to read and be educated! In his wise-beyond-his-years words, “They can still take this reading thing and turn it into their habit, their life-long habit.”
The books he offers change every day, but he always offers the opportunity to join him in a book discussion, purchase a book he’ll review for you first, or simply grab a free book for a child.
In his own unique way, he spreads knowledge through books while making himself some extra money to get by. He also provides some happiness for children who may not otherwise have access to books.
Thank you for your service to your community, Philani. You are an inspiration and a boss!
We leave you with a quote from this great man, “Reading is not harmful. There’s no such thing as harmful knowledge. This thing is only going to make you a better person.”
