Whether you call it football or soccer, we’re talking about the sport where 11 players kick a ball around for 90 minutes, not American football. Starting this month, the 2014 Fifa World Cup will be held in Brasil and soccer is thus on the map for just about everyone into sports. (And numerous people who don’t care about sports, but enjoy a good party.)

This story has nothing to do with that, instead it has everything to do with saving lives! Sport Club Recife, a very popular football club in the north-eastern part of Brasil, has asked its fanbase to become immortal by becoming organ donors. By doing this, their organs will (in theory) place the desire to watch and cheer for Sport Club Recife into the person receiving them.

The “Immortal Fans” project has caused a dramatic increase in life-changing (and often life-saving) organ transplants in the area. The waiting lists are no longer really needed for organ donations thanks to these terrific football fans! The waiting list in the city of Recife itself has already been taken down to zero!
Die hard soccer fans want their passion to live on after they pass away. What better way to do this than to pass on the love for the club embedded into their organs to another person? We really can’t think of a better way and absolutely approve of what the fans of Sport Club Recife are doing for the people living around them.

While the decision whether organs are donated is ultimately up to family members according to Brazilian law, the organ donor card gives a clear indication as to what the deceased would have wanted.
We hope the World Cup in Brasil further promotes this idea of fan immortality through organ donation within the fanbases of many football clubs around the world. Being an organ donor is one of the most bosslike things you can ever do in our humble opinion!
